Horticulture Strategic Plan

Vision

We will be foremost among peer institutions—both nationally and internationally—as leaders in education, extension, and research in the horticultural sciences. Our discoveries and new technologies will produce economic, environmental, and health benefits that are key to Texas’ success and vital in the lives of its citizens.

Mission

The Department of Horticultural Sciences is focused on improving the quality of life related to the aesthetic disciplines and the production of high-quality, healthful fruits and vegetables. This is accomplished by developing new knowledge and tools through basic and translational research, by translating research results to clientele through extension programming, and by providing our students with the information and skills needed for success.

Our mission includes:

  1. Providing educational opportunities for students in the pursuit of careers in horticulture and related fields.
  2. Developing and delivering research-based knowledge upon which efficient and profitable horticultural crop production can be built.
  3. Improving the competitive position of the Texas horticulture industry.
  4. Increasing the quality, variety, and availability of horticultural products.
  5. Developing and delivering research-based knowledge related to how horticulture improves our environment.

Goals

Attract high academic potential students with diverse backgrounds and experiences

Educate, train and graduate additional students

Develop well-educated graduates with the technical knowledge and skills for success in their chosen area of horticulture. Leverage the strong departmental research programs in social science to analyze workforce needs at the BS/BA and Masters levels.

Strengthen competitiveness, prosperity, and sustainability of the Green Industry

The green industry is big business in Texas, accounting for $38 billion in sales in 2017 (Palma & Hall, 2018 TNLA report). The total economic impact of green industries includes production and manufacturing, wholesale and retail sectors, as well as nursery and greenhouse production. It is therefore crucial that we engage in research activities that protect and enhance the competitiveness, prosperity, and sustainability of Texas horticulture.

Improve public health and well-being

Public health is not only a major financial concern, but it is integral to the quality of life. It is vital that research be conducted to maintain and enhance public health, quality of life, and well-being. Promote nutrition and healthy lifestyles to prevent acute and chronic illness. The relationship between nutrition and health has long been acknowledged. Recent investigations have established the importance of nutrition within the context of a healthy lifestyle. We will conduct research to provide consumers, nutritionists, and health professionals with fruits and vegetables that embody good nutrition as part of a healthy lifestyle that is critical to preventing acute and chronic illness.

The Department of Horticultural Science’s strategic plan embodies a forward-looking roadmap that orchestrates its trajectory into a thriving future. Rooted in a profound commitment to advancing agricultural practices, the plan envisions a harmonious fusion of scientific innovation, sustainable methodologies, and societal well-being. By fostering cutting-edge research in plant breeding, cultivation techniques, and resource optimization, the department seeks to fortify global food security and elevate the quality of horticultural produce. Through collaboration with industry partners and dissemination of knowledge, the plan strives to empower practitioners, farmers, and communities with the tools to navigate the evolving challenges of a changing climate and growing population. In essence, the strategic plan underscores the department’s dedication to nurturing not only plants, but also a flourishing and resilient world.
